Causal Inference Theory

Course Description: This course introduces participants to foundational methods in statistical inference and causal reasoning, with a focus on empirical legal research. The course emphasizes conceptual understanding of causal inference and the ability to critically evaluate quantitative studies in law and related social sciences. Students who are interested can sign up for the optional R coding sessions. By the end of the course, participants will be able to::

• Understand key theoretical concepts in causal inference design;
• Critically evaluate empirical research based on observational legal data;
• Lay the groundwork for future interdisciplinary research collaborations with social scientists.

Prior Requirements: None.

• 3 September 2026, 11:00-14:00
• 10 September 2026, 11:00-14:00
• 17 September 2026, 11:00-14:00
• 24 September 2026, 11:00-14:00

Practical information:

• The course has up to five spots available for ELS members.
• The courses will be offered in English and in person in the A building on the Roeterseiland Campus of the UvA.
• There are no requirements to attend.
