Practical information

This workshop is designed to provide researchers with an introduction to web scraping and how it can be used for research in Empirical Legal Studies. The first part of the workshop introduces the basic structure and function of web pages, explains the relevance of APIs, and offers an overview and demo of essential Python libraries for web scraping, such as BeautifulSoup and Scrapy (no prior Python knowledge is required, though it can be beneficial). The second part demonstrates how this data can enhance research in Empirical Legal Studies through case studies and practical examples. By the end of this workshop, participants will have gained introductory knowledge of web scraping techniques and an appreciation for the potential of quantitative observational data in legal research, which is ideal for researchers in Empirical Legal Studies looking to expand their methodological toolkit.

Julia Krämer is a third-year PhD candidate in Empirical Legal Studies in the Department of Law and Business at the Erasmus School of Law. Her research focuses on the quantitative analysis of law and Data Protection Law and explores whether and how mobile platforms are able to implement and foster the goals of privacy regulation, with a special focus on the role of app stores.

LEVEL: Medium\Advanced (although no prior knowledge is expected)

ELS Academy’s No-Show Policy:

Please note that the workshops are given by experts in the field who do this on a voluntary basis. Places are often limited and we have people on the waiting list. For this reason, the ELS Academy has a strict no-show policy. In case you are prevented from attending the workshop, kindly send an email to contact@elsacademy.nl at least 48 hours before the workshop to make space for people on the waiting list.

If you do not attend the workshop without prior cancellation, your supervisor will be informed about your no-show and you will not be able to register for another ELS Academy event for the next two months. This is also very unfortunate for us, however, it can be prevented if we receive a simple cancellation via e-mail.

Thank you for understanding and see you there!
