Practical information

Lawnotation is software that allows researchers to annotate (i.e., label or tag) texts and calculate whether the annotations of one annotator differ from those of another (interrater reliability). The output can be used to train machine learning models that automatically identify names, dates, references, legal concepts, or other things they were trained on. The software is open-source and free for researchers to use.

In this workshop, the software will be demonstrated. After the demonstration, participants can try out the software and start annotating!

The workshop will be provided by Gijs van Dijck. Gijs is a Professor of Private Law and heads the Maastricht Law and Tech Lab, an interdisciplinary group of legal researchers and computer scientists who apply and reflect on data-driven analyses in relation to the law. Additionally, he is a Principal Investigator at the Brightlands Institute for Smart Society (BISS) and researcher at M-EPLI.

ELS Academy’s No-Show Policy:

Please note that the workshops are given by experts in the field who do this on a voluntary basis. Places are often limited and we have people on the waiting list. For this reason, the ELS Academy has a strict no-show policy. In case you are prevented from attending the workshop, kindly send an email to contact@elsacademy.nl at least 48 hours before the workshop to make space for people on the waiting list.

If you do not attend the workshop without prior cancellation, your supervisor will be informed about your no-show and you will not be able to register for another ELS Academy event for the next two months. This is also very unfortunate for us, however, it can be prevented if we receive a simple cancellation via e-mail.

Thank you for understanding and see you there!
