Practical information

This workshop introduces researchers in Empirical Legal Studies to web scraping as a research method. It consists of two parts.

The first part covers the basic structure and functioning of web pages, providing the theoretical grounding needed to understand what web scraping involves. Topics include basic website structure such as the distinction between front end and back end, and the growing use of anti-scraping measures such as CAPTCHAs. It also addresses the ethical dimensions of scraping and the current regulatory frameworks that govern it.

The second part offers a hands-on demonstration of two key Python libraries for web scraping, BeautifulSoup and Scrapy. Participants will also learn how to use APIs to retrieve data directly from a website’s back end.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have an introductory command of web scraping techniques and a sense of the potential that quantitative observational data holds for legal research. The workshop is particularly suited to researchers in Empirical Legal Studies looking to expand their methodological toolkit.

ELS Academy’s No-Show Policy:
Please note that the workshops are given by experts in the field who do this on a voluntary basis. Places are often limited and we have people on the waiting list. For this reason, the ELS Academy has a strict no-show policy. In case you are prevented from attending the workshop, kindly send an email to contact@elsacademy.nl at least 48 hours before the workshop to make space for people on the waiting list.

If you do not attend the workshop without prior cancellation, your supervisor will be informed about your no-show and you will not be able to register for another ELS Academy event for the next two months. This is also very unfortunate for us, however, it can be prevented if we receive a simple cancellation via e-mail.

Thank you for understanding and see you there!
