Join our upcoming Methods Seminar, where we explore how research in the Social Sciences and Humanities can actively contribute to a more resilient and impactful society.
In this session, we focus on the Living Lab approach: a form of transdisciplinary research in which researchers collaborate closely with societal partners to co-create innovations to test them in real-world settings.
Rather than studying reality from a distance, Living Labs engage with its complexity, bringing together diverse stakeholders, forms of knowledge, and all kinds of methods such as surveys, interviews, observation, co-design, and action research. We will discuss different types of Living Labs, and the practical and academic challenges they raise, including inclusivity, researcher roles, and publishing.
This seminar is part of the Methods series of the Sectorplan Welfare, Participation and Citizenship in the Digital World together with Sectorplan Social and Behavioural Sciences of Utrecht University.
LEVEL: Basic/medium
METHOD: Qualitative and quantitative
ABOUT THE LECTURER: Ansfrida Vreeburg is a project leader at Utrecht University, where she promotes transdisciplinary research within the Sectorplan Welfare, Participation, and Citizenship in the Digital World. She is involved in developing a Living Lab approach in the Utrecht region, fostering collaboration between academia and societal partners. In her work, she aims to build sustainable partnerships that generate both practically applicable and scientifically robust knowledge, while exploring how Living Labs can create value for all involved.
Claudia Stuckrath Alvarado is a PhD candidate at Utrecht University (Faculty of Geosciences), researching Living Lab approaches in the context of circular economy and sustainability, with a particular focus on Campus Labs. Alongside her research, she is actively involved in the UU Centre for Living Labs (UCLL), where she combines academic insight with creativity to help design and develop new Living Labs. Her work contributes to both scientific debate and practical innovation around Campus Labs.
