In the workshop, participants will explore the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence in legal research and case law analysis. Leveraging Python and APIs, the course is designed to automate the analysis of European Case Law Identifier (ECLI) decisions from Rechtspraak.nl. Attendees will gain hands-on experience in web scraping using Python’s ‘requests’ library, XML parsing, and interacting with OpenAI’s API for advanced textual queries. A highlight of the course is a live demonstration of a specially designed program named ‘Lucius.’ This Python-based tool facilitates keyword-based search across a database of ECLIs, offers options to refine the search results, and provides AI-powered insights through a chat interface.
Combining programming fundamentals with innovative AI technologies, the course provides a practical toolkit for modern-day legal professionals, researchers, and tech enthusiasts interested in the intersection of law and technology.
The workshop will take place in the Room 019, Janskerhof 2-3.
