WELCOME TO AMSTERDAM FROM THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE!

Welcome to the 2022 International Empirical Legal Studies (ELS) Conference, organized by the Netherlands Academy for Empirical Legal Studies. The Conference will be held on-site in Amsterdam on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September 2022 and is hosted by the Faculty of Law of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The Conference will offer you a unique place to engage, discuss and present your research results in the field of empirical legal research with other international empirical legal scholars.

The Netherlands Academy for Empirical Legal Studies serves as a platform for (aspiring) empirical legal scholars from all universities in the Netherlands. For the 2022 International ELS Conference, we invite all involved in legal research using qualitative and/or quantitative methods to submit abstracts, that may focus on ongoing or completed research on the assumptions, the functioning and the impact of the law. Click Call for Papers for more detailed information on abstract submission.

Amsterdam provides an excellent venue for the Conference, with its multiple historical and cultural attractions. Click Practical Information for details on accommodation and things to do in Amsterdam.

The programme of the Conference will include both paper presentation sessions and a poster session. Click Programme for a preliminary timetable of the Conference. Preceding the Conference, we aim to confer with interested ELS colleagues about the possibility to establish a European Society for Empirical Legal Studies, that would also publish its own European Journal of Empirical Legal Studies. Based on a quick scan among fellow ELS scholars, we believe there may be a need for an academic society that furthers exchange among legal scholars employing quantitative and qualitative methodologies in the study of empirical legal questions relevant to Europe and in European jurisdictions.

We look forward to welcoming you in Amsterdam in September 2022!
